Domestic Abuse Advocacy Posters
Project Outline
This project was to create a triptych to advocate for an organization of our choosing. This series was created to reach the victims of domestic violence. They were designed to be shown together, but should be able to stand on their own as well.
The Process
The illustrations were digitally drawn and the hands were color-corrected until I found a good complimentary yellow to the purple. The illustrations were drawn in a sketchy manner to create an uneasy feeling in the design. The grunge texture in the background was selected to add to that feeling, as well as imply bruising to the paper and the victims.
Made with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
The Process
I immediately thought of the phrase “See no evil. Hear no evil. Speak no evil.” This phrase means to turn a blind eye to something that is morally wrong, which some victims may be doing to their abuser. I did research to see which gender and age group received the most emotional and physical abuse. This information I found lead me to my subjects used for each poster. Young men experience the most emotional abuse, whether from a partner or family member. Young females experience the most physical abuse. And young to middle age females are those who are least likely to report the abuse. I paired these chaotic, scratchy illustrations with the related word, highlighting that word along with the abusers’ hands. This was to grab their attention and then offered support and comfort by acknowledging their experiences. The footer offers a call to action, a way out of the situation they are in or a way for others to donate to help those in need.
